Name Changes

People change their names for many reasons. Perhaps your birth certificate says Willie but you've always been called William and you want to change your name. Perhaps you wish to take back your maiden name but didn't do so at the time of divorce. Maybe you have taken a spiritual name that feels like your true name and you want to make it your legal name.  Or maybe you're a transgender individual and wish to change your name to reflect your new gender.

In any case, the process has several steps. You must post a notice at the courthouse for 10 days, you must provide proof of good character (a background check and statements from county residents), and file some documents with the clerk. There is a filing fee in addition to the legal fees.
